A crane overturned and caught fire during a heavy cargo-lifting operation at Mumbai Port's BPS terminal in Ballard Estate on August 30. The incident occurred while a 140-metric-tonne cargo was being unloaded from the Barbados-flagged vessel Vienna.
According to reports, the load became imbalanced during the operation, causing the crane to lose stability. Its boom subsequently struck the vessel, following which a fire broke out and the crane overturned.
Fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. Two crane operators were injured in the incident and were taken to St George Hospital for treatment. Police have initiated an investigation into the accident. No fatalities have been reported.
